| Description: | This is the story of a non-clergy teacher, William Franklin (Quinn), who is hired at a Catholic reformatory school near a small village in Ireland in 1939, shortly after his wife was killed during the Spanish Civil War, where they were both fighting on the side of the Communists. As the haunted widower tries to bring literacy and a love of the written word into the lives of the young boys who are his students, William finds himself clashing with the violent (and/or sexually deviant) monks who rule over the students with steel hands, forcing them to live by arbitrary rules, such as not crossing a line painted near a wall splitting the playground in half. |
| Remarques: | This movie is based upon the autobiographical book, "Song for a Raggy Boy", by Patrick Galvin, based on his own experiences at the St. Jude reformatory school in Ireland. Shockingly, one of the more "evil" characters in the movie is described in the end credits as having moved to America, where he still lives (probably under a new identity). |
